What is a Psychologist?

A Psychologist is a health professional with expertise in understanding the basic elements of human functioning - our particular ways of thinking, feeling, learning and behaving. Psychologists in Ontario have a doctoral degree in psychology and are trained in assessing and treating these aspects of human functioning. Psychologists can help people reduce distress and unhappiness by acting as a skilled troubleshooter who can assist people seeking to more effectively face challenges and problems and to reduce limits to effective functioning.

A Psychologist in this province must become registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario before they can become a certified clinician. Unlike unregulated providers, Psychologists must practice according to the laws governing regulated health professionals in Ontario and the guidelines and standards set by the College of Psychologists. This helps protect the public interest. The registration process involves rigorous educational and training programs and successful completion of multiple comprehensive examinations. Psychologists must also continually upgrade their knowledge, skills and competency.
